What is microcopy, and how do labels and errors help or hurt the experience?

Microcopy is the short, contextual text in the UI: button labels, helper text, empty states, and errors. Vague 'Submit' on a long form is weaker than 'Save profile'; error text should say what went wrong and how to fix, not 'Invalid input'. Active voice, sentence case, and consistent product terminology reduce cognitive load. In forms, a label, placeholder, and help text are different jobs: the placeholder is not a replacement for a visible label. Work with a content designer or a style guide; legal and marketing sometimes constrain wording, but clarity should still be the goal. Translate early if you are global: English idioms in errors confuse international users.

Start simple: try this concept in a tiny project before moving to advanced tools.
